Brain-Computer Interface Lab

Available Grades 9–12 Biosignals Computing & data

Build a battery-powered single-channel EEG recorder, compare FFT alpha band power with eyes open and closed, and train a simple classifier to switch an LED, tested against chance. Educational and non-medical.

Overview & learning outcomes

Students build a single-channel, battery-powered EEG/EMG recorder (Upside Down Labs BioAmp EXG Pill + ESP32 Feather V2, Bluetooth to a laptop), calibrate it in microvolts, learn to recognise blinks, jaw clenching and 60 Hz interference, compute band power with an FFT, test whether alpha power rises with eyes closed (and report it honestly, including people where it doesn't), and train a one-feature classifier that switches an LED, tested against chance with held-out blocks.

Students will:

  • Explain what EEG measures (microvolt-level scalp potentials) and recognize common artifacts: blinks, jaw clenching, and 60 Hz mains interference
  • Apply sampling and the Nyquist limit, notch-filter mains noise, and compute band power with an FFT (e.g., alpha 8–12 Hz, beta 13–30 Hz)
  • Test whether alpha power rises with eyes closed and relaxed, and report the effect size honestly, including subjects where it doesn't
  • Train and test a simple classifier with held-out data, compare its accuracy with chance, and use it to switch an LED

Every high school pack includes worked math and physics, prediction-versus-measurement labs, at least two design-and-test iterations, data logging, a rubric, and documentation templates, plus printable Builder's Corner build journal pages.

Bill of materials & where to buy

Parts, specs, quantities, and estimated unit costs, with places to buy. Prices change; anything marked as an estimate is an estimate. Links were checked when the BOM was written.

Isolator check: Before first use, each station's isolator must pass the build-guide B1c bench check (upload and boot with Bluetooth on through the isolator). If it fails, upload with the battery OFF and accept the reset loop until USB is removed; never remove the isolator.

Tindie stock: B2 and B3 (Upside Down Labs on Tindie) could not be re-confirmed in stock (Tindie returned 403 on 2026-10-13). Check stock before ordering; any pre-gelled Ag/AgCl snap electrodes (ECG type) substitute for B3.

Estimated kit cost

  • A. Biosignal front end (per station): $62.47 typical · $58.47 low-cost path
  • B. Controller, battery and output (per station): $96.50 typical · $79.10 low-cost path
  • C. Tools and safety (once per school): $124.09 typical · $15.59 low-cost path
  • Everything from zero: $283.06 typical · $153.16 low-cost path (low-cost path uses listed substitutes and assumes a school or makerspace already owns reusable tools)

Totals are computed from the line items below. Prices were read from vendor pages on the dates shown and will change. Rows tagged estimate have no verified link and are planning numbers only.

Safety & legal notes

  • NOT a medical device. This pack does not diagnose, treat, monitor, or predict any medical or psychological condition. Never use results for health decisions.
  • Electrodes on a person = 4 × AA NiMH battery + Bluetooth only. The USB cable is for programming with no one attached, through the station's required USB isolator (a second barrier, not medical-grade, never permission to record over USB). Never connect electrodes to anything plugged into mains power.
  • Grades 9–12 (ages 14–18); electrodes are applied by the student to themselves or a consenting partner under teacher supervision.
  • No flashing-light stimuli: the activities avoid flicker-based paradigms because of photosensitive seizure risk; the classifier LED cannot toggle faster than 2 Hz, and the board's charge LED is taped over.
  • Clean electrodes between users and stop if skin irritation occurs.
  • Privacy: brain recordings are personal data. Get informed consent (parent/guardian consent for minors), make participation optional, label data by code not name, keep it on local machines, and delete it at the end of the unit.
  • Students should work with adult supervision for tools, soldering, batteries, and anything flagged in the BOM.
