CubeSat Payload Systems Lab

Available Grades 9–12 Aerospace Computing & data

Build a ground-test sensor payload in the 1U CubeSat form factor, write its power and data budgets, and verify it against requirements with bench tests.

Overview & learning outcomes

Build a ground-test sensor payload in the 1U CubeSat form factor (100 × 100 × 113.5 mm), write its requirements and its orbit, power and data budgets, then verify it against those requirements with bench tests: power by mode, mass and centre of gravity, data generated vs. downlinked through a compressed-time "pass", and fault responses.

Students will:

  • Write subsystem requirements and a verification matrix
  • Build a power budget (mW, mWh) and a data budget, then check both against measured values
  • Integrate sensors on a shared I²C/SPI bus and log housekeeping telemetry
  • Run simple bench thermal and vibration checks and document results like a design review

Every high school pack includes worked math and physics, prediction-versus-measurement labs, at least two design-and-test iterations, data logging, a rubric, and documentation templates, plus printable Builder's Corner build journal pages.

Bill of materials & where to buy

Parts, specs, quantities, and estimated unit costs, with places to buy. Prices change; anything marked as an estimate is an estimate. Links were checked when the BOM was written.

Estimated kit cost

  • A. Payload electronics (per CubeSat): $122.45 typical · $81.60 low-cost path
  • B. Power (per CubeSat): $24.34 typical · $19.39 low-cost path
  • C. Structure (per CubeSat): $41.95 typical · $31.95 low-cost path
  • D. Test equipment and safety (once per school or station): $199.84 typical · $74.84 low-cost path
  • Everything from zero: $388.58 typical · $207.78 low-cost path (low-cost path uses listed substitutes and assumes a school or makerspace already owns reusable tools)

Totals are computed from the line items below. Prices were read from vendor pages on the dates shown and will change. Rows tagged estimate have no verified link and are planning numbers only.

Safety & legal notes

  • This is a classroom ground model, not a flight-qualified spacecraft.
  • LiPo cells and heat-lamp tests need adult supervision and a fire-safe surface.
  • Students should work with adult supervision for tools, soldering, batteries, and anything flagged in the BOM.
