DIY Spectrometer & Light Analysis Lab

Available Grades 9–12 Optics & EO

Build a diffraction-grating spectrometer with a camera, calibrate it against known emission lines, and measure the spectra of lamps and filters.

Overview & learning outcomes

Students build a light-tight birch box with a slit, a 1000 lines/mm transmission grating and a USB webcam, then turn a camera image into a calibrated spectrum: pixel → wavelength using the mercury lines of a fluorescent lamp (NIST wavelengths), checked against Fraunhofer lines in daylight. With that instrument they measure LED spectra, the transmission of filters, and the Beer–Lambert law for food dye, including where it stops being linear and why.

No laser is used, needed or allowed. Calibration is done with fluorescent-lamp mercury lines (see safety.md).

Students will:

  • Apply the grating equation (d sin θ = mλ) to predict where lines appear
  • Calibrate pixel position to wavelength using known mercury lines from a fluorescent lamp (e.g., 435.8 nm and 546.1 nm)
  • Estimate spectral resolution and what limits it
  • Measure transmission through colored filters or solutions and connect absorbance to concentration (Beer–Lambert)

Every high school pack includes worked math and physics, prediction-versus-measurement labs, at least two design-and-test iterations, data logging, a rubric, and documentation templates, plus printable Builder's Corner build journal pages.

Bill of materials & where to buy

Parts, specs, quantities, and estimated unit costs, with places to buy. Prices change; anything marked as an estimate is an estimate. Links were checked when the BOM was written.

Estimated kit cost

  • A. Optics and camera (per station): $64.22 typical · $55.98 low-cost path
  • B. Light sources and electrics (per station) — no laser: $32.60 typical · $17.60 low-cost path
  • C. Structure and chemistry (per station): $43.00 typical · $28.00 low-cost path
  • D. Tools and safety (once per school or station): $10.64 typical · $10.64 low-cost path
  • Everything from zero: $150.46 typical · $112.22 low-cost path (low-cost path uses listed substitutes and assumes a school or makerspace already owns reusable tools)

Totals are computed from the line items below. Prices were read from vendor pages on the dates shown and will change. Rows tagged estimate have no verified link and are planning numbers only.

Safety & legal notes

  • Never point the spectrometer, or your eyes, at the Sun.
  • Do not use laser pointers as light sources in a way that can reach anyone's eyes.
  • Mains-powered lamps get hot: adult supervision.
  • Students should work with adult supervision for tools, soldering, batteries, and anything flagged in the BOM.
