Inverse Kinematics Robot Arm

Available Grades 9–12 Robotics & controls

Build a 3-joint servo arm, derive its forward and inverse kinematics, and measure how far the gripper lands from commanded targets.

Overview & learning outcomes

Laue Labs · HS-03 · Status: in technical review (not released, no price set).

Students build a laser-cut, three-joint arm (base yaw, shoulder, elbow) that holds a pencil over an engraved target board. They derive forward and inverse kinematics with right-triangle trig and the law of cosines, calibrate each servo against real angles, then measure accuracy and repeatability on 25 engraved targets the way industry measures robot arms, and fit corrections from their own data.

  • Controller: Adafruit ESP32 Feather V2 + 8-Channel PWM/Servo FeatherWing (PCA9685).
  • Joints: 2 × FEETECH FS5106B (base, shoulder), 1 × FEETECH FS90 (elbow); L₁ = 130 mm, L₂ ≈ 120 mm to the pencil tip.
  • Power: UL-listed 5 V 4 A plug-in supply for the servos; the Feather runs from USB. No batteries, no mains wiring.
  • Estimated hardware cost: $314.29 everything-from-zero typical, $166.75 per arm (sections A–C), $169.39 low-cost path. $266.29 of the typical total is from 17 vendor pages; $48.00 is estimates. See BOM.md.

Students will:

  • Derive forward kinematics for a planar two-link arm plus base rotation using trigonometry
  • Solve inverse kinematics with the law of cosines, including elbow-up and elbow-down solutions and unreachable targets
  • Map the reachable workspace and explain singular configurations
  • Measure end-effector error and repeatability, and relate them to servo resolution and link tolerances

Every high school pack includes worked math and physics, prediction-versus-measurement labs, at least two design-and-test iterations, data logging, a rubric, and documentation templates, plus printable Builder's Corner build journal pages.

Safety & legal notes

  • Pinch points at every joint: keep fingers clear while powered.
  • Power servos from a separate supply sized for stall current, not from the microcontroller's 5 V pin.
  • Students should work with adult supervision for tools, soldering, batteries, and anything flagged in the BOM.
