Star Tracker & Satellite Attitude Lab

Available Grades 9–12 Aerospace Robotics & controls Optics & EO

Point a reaction-wheel turntable using a camera that matches star patterns on a printed star field, close the pointing loop, and measure pointing accuracy and jitter.

Overview & learning outcomes

Students build a small "satellite" on a ball-bearing turntable: a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W camera looks up at a printed star field, identifies the stars by their angular-separation pattern, computes the platform's attitude, and turns it with a reaction wheel driven by an ESP32 Feather. They predict the momentum exchange, measure turntable friction, close the pointing loop, push the wheel into saturation, and measure pointing error and jitter against a pixel-level error budget.

This is an indoor model that uses a printed star field. It is not sky-capable and it is not a flight star tracker.

Students will:

  • Use conservation of angular momentum to predict how far the platform turns when the reaction wheel spins up (I_wheel·Δω_wheel = −I_platform·Δω_platform on a low-friction turntable)
  • Identify stars by matching angular-separation patterns against a small catalog, then compute the platform's attitude from the matched stars
  • Close a pointing loop from camera attitude to wheel torque, and see what happens when the wheel reaches its speed limit (saturation)
  • Measure pointing error and RMS jitter, and relate them to camera resolution (degrees per pixel) and control-loop rate

Every high school pack includes worked math and physics, prediction-versus-measurement labs, at least two design-and-test iterations, data logging, a rubric, and documentation templates, plus printable Builder's Corner build journal pages.

Bill of materials & where to buy

Parts, specs, quantities, and estimated unit costs, with places to buy. Prices change; anything marked as an estimate is an estimate. Links were checked when the BOM was written.

Estimated kit cost

  • A. Camera and attitude computer (per turntable): $63.70 typical · $55.70 low-cost path
  • B. Wheel drive, gyro and power (per turntable): $166.71 typical · $143.31 low-cost path
  • C. Structure, wheel and star field (per turntable): $49.88 typical · $41.88 low-cost path
  • D. Tools and safety (once per school): $124.09 typical · $15.59 low-cost path
  • Everything from zero: $404.38 typical · $256.48 low-cost path (low-cost path uses listed substitutes and assumes a school or makerspace already owns reusable tools)

Totals are computed from the line items below. Prices were read from vendor pages on the dates shown and will change. Rows tagged estimate have no verified link and are planning numbers only.
