High School / HS-06

Thermal Imaging & Heat Transfer Lab

Available Grades 9–12 Optics & EO Energy

Use a low-resolution thermal sensor array to image heat flow, then measure conduction and cooling curves and compare them with simple models.

Overview & learning outcomes

Point a 32 × 24-pixel thermal camera at real hardware and measure heat moving. Students learn why a thermal camera "lies" about shiny metal (emissivity), measure Newton's-law cooling of aluminium coupons, image the steady temperature profile along heated aluminium and copper bars, fit the fin equation to get the ratio of their thermal conductivities, and compare a heat-up movie with a finite-difference model they can run themselves.

Students will:

  • Explain thermal radiation and why emissivity makes shiny metal read colder than it is
  • Relate sensor field of view and pixel count to the smallest feature you can resolve at a given distance
  • Fit Newton's-law-of-cooling time constants to logged data
  • Measure a temperature gradient along a conducting rod and compare with Fourier's law

Every high school pack includes worked math and physics, prediction-versus-measurement labs, at least two design-and-test iterations, data logging, a rubric, and documentation templates, plus printable Builder's Corner build journal pages.

Bill of materials & where to buy

Parts, specs, quantities, and estimated unit costs, with places to buy. Prices change; anything marked as an estimate is an estimate. Links were checked when the BOM was written.

Estimated kit cost

  • A. Sensing and control electronics (per station): $163.00 typical · $110.85 low-cost path
  • B. Heater and power (per station): $22.85 typical · $22.85 low-cost path
  • C. Metal samples (per station): $52.57 typical · $45.57 low-cost path
  • D. Structure (per station): $47.45 typical · $25.50 low-cost path
  • E. Tools and safety (once per school or station): $130.86 typical · $20.91 low-cost path
  • Everything from zero: $416.73 typical · $225.68 low-cost path (low-cost path uses listed substitutes and assumes a school or makerspace already owns reusable tools)

Totals are computed from the line items below. Prices were read from vendor pages on the dates shown and will change. Rows tagged estimate have no verified link and are planning numbers only.
