High School / HS-12

Weather Balloon Near-Space Mission

Available Grades 9–12 Aerospace RF & space

Plan a high-altitude balloon flight: build a sensor payload that logs its own flight path, predict ascent rate and burst altitude, and compare the predictions with recovered data.

Overview & learning outcomes

Students build a non-transmitting GNSS and sensor logger, predict the flight (lift, ascent rate, burst altitude, descent, drift) from first principles, fly it to ≈ 25–30 km under a 600 g latex balloon with an adult flight director, recover it, and compare the data with the predictions and the US Standard Atmosphere 1976.

Students will:

  • Calculate buoyancy and free lift, and predict ascent rate with a drag model
  • Estimate burst altitude from balloon specifications and the standard atmosphere
  • Size a parachute for a target descent rate
  • Plot temperature, pressure, and altitude from the recovered log and explain the trends

Every high school pack includes worked math and physics, prediction-versus-measurement labs, at least two design-and-test iterations, data logging, a rubric, and documentation templates, plus printable Builder's Corner build journal pages.

Bill of materials & where to buy

Parts, specs, quantities, and estimated unit costs, with places to buy. Prices change; anything marked as an estimate is an estimate. Links were checked when the BOM was written.

Estimated kit cost

  • A. Payload electronics (non-transmitting flight logger): $205.97 typical · $155.57 low-cost path
  • B. Flight train and launch (per flight): $421.50 typical · $244.50 low-cost path
  • C. Structure: $8.50 typical · $8.50 low-cost path
  • D. Tools and safety (once per school): $101.41 typical · $20.91 low-cost path
  • Everything from zero: $737.38 typical · $429.48 low-cost path (low-cost path uses listed substitutes and assumes a school or makerspace already owns reusable tools)

Totals are computed from the line items below. Prices were read from vendor pages on the dates shown and will change. Rows tagged estimate have no verified link and are planning numbers only.

Safety & legal notes

  • Flights must follow FAA 14 CFR Part 101 rules for unmanned free balloons, including payload weight limits and any required notifications. Check before every launch.
  • Tracking that transmits may require a license (for example, APRS needs an FCC amateur radio license).
  • Compressed helium cylinders need secure transport and adult handling. Never inhale helium.
  • Choose launch sites away from airports and plan recovery away from power lines and water.
  • Students should work with adult supervision for tools, soldering, batteries, and anything flagged in the BOM.
