Wind Turbine Blade Design Lab

Available Grades 9–12 Energy

Design and test small turbine blades in front of a fan, measure electrical power across loads, and plot power coefficient against tip-speed ratio.

Overview & learning outcomes

Design and test small turbine blades in front of a box fan. Measure the wind, the generator's constants, electrical power across a set of loads, and — with a rope-brake dynamometer — the rotor's own power coefficient against tip-speed ratio. Then design your own blades and improve them twice.

Students will:

  • Calculate power available in the wind (P = ½ρAv³) and explain the Betz limit (16/27)
  • Measure electrical power into a set of load resistors and find the best load for each blade design
  • Compute tip-speed ratio (λ = ωR/v) and plot C_p versus λ
  • Iterate blade count, pitch, or twist across at least two design rounds and justify changes with data

Every high school pack includes worked math and physics, prediction-versus-measurement labs, at least two design-and-test iterations, data logging, a rubric, and documentation templates, plus printable Builder's Corner build journal pages.

Bill of materials & where to buy

Parts, specs, quantities, and estimated unit costs, with places to buy. Prices change; anything marked as an estimate is an estimate. Links were checked when the BOM was written.

Estimated kit cost

  • A. Measurement electronics (per station): $67.71 typical · $62.76 low-cost path
  • B. Wind measurement (per station): $110.90 typical · $55.90 low-cost path
  • C. Turbine parts (per station): $70.00 typical · $70.00 low-cost path
  • D. Stand and brake (per station): $41.50 typical · $10.50 low-cost path
  • E. Tools and safety (once per school or station): $184.79 typical · $74.84 low-cost path
  • Everything from zero: $474.90 typical · $274.00 low-cost path (low-cost path uses listed substitutes and assumes a school or makerspace already owns reusable tools)

Totals are computed from the line items below. Prices were read from vendor pages on the dates shown and will change. Rows tagged estimate have no verified link and are planning numbers only.

  • Spinning blades: use a guard, wear eye protection, and stand out of the blade plane.
  • Secure the fan and turbine so neither can tip; keep cords clear.
  • Students should work with adult supervision for tools, soldering, batteries, and anything flagged in the BOM.
